Q: When do you cut Hydrangeas back and how far do I go. I have ten lovely plants in my front yard and am looking to buy some large plants that like shade. A: The best way to cut hydrangeas is to remove the old stems to the ground in early spring. This forces new growth from the very bottom which will thicken the plant. If they are cut in the middle of the plant or the upper part of the plant, it forces succulent growth from the cut which looks unnatural. The Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea Quercifolia) or Hydrangea Macrophylla both do well in a partial shade. Good drainage is very important. |
