What can I do to rid my plants of spots?
Q:   I planted an Oakleaf hydrangea this spring which has black spots on
most of the leaves.   What can I do to rid my plants of these spots and what
are they?

A:   It sounds as if there is a fungus of some sort responsible for the black
spots. A certain diagnosis and preferred treatment could be made by
taking a sample leaf to a knowledgeable nurseryman or a county extension
agent. Many fungus problems can be tolerated and ignored unless they
result in death of the shrub. Most types of fungus are happier in still,
moist shade. More sun and good air circulation might discourage the
fungus and let your hydrangea show its natural beauty.
