We live three miles from the coast...
Q.  We live three miles from the coast in Northeast Florida. I did not keep the tag of the type of hydrangea that I purchased, but the flowers are huge, variegated in color. My problem is the bottom leaves have fallen off and are filled with holes. I check my Florida sources, and (they suggest) treatment with Ivory soap and water with a little vegetable oil to stick to the leaves. However, the actual flowers are dying and I'm not sure is it's about ready to die on us or if this is natural during this time of year. I rather doubt it. Can you help?

A.  Very likely these leaves have a fungus or leaf spots. These could be caused by shading of the upper leaves or too much water on the foliage. Water in the morning rather than in the evenings. Cleaning the affected leaves from the plants helps a lot.
