The center looks almost like a half-dollar Queen Anne's Lace.
Q: My sister lives in northern New Jersey and has several hydrangeas
that bloom near a fence in the afternoon sun. She planted one last year which is obviously a different variety but we don't have any idea which one. It has about four individual buds of blue and then the center looks almost like a half-dollar Queen Anne's Lace. This wouldn't be what they call shamrock, would it?

A: This is a hydrangea macrophylla normalis or lace cap hydrangea.   These are like the ones that occur naturally in their native Asia.
