I am interested in rooting hydrangeas.
Q:  I am interested in rooting hydrangeas.   I have had some success in the past, but am wondering the best times to take cuttings.   There was an article in Southern Living regarding this subject, but I seem to have misplaced this issue.   I recently read that it takes years to root by means of layering.   Can you give me some info regarding rooting?

A: The best time to take cutting is in late May or early June.   A tip cutting of about 5 inches where there is no bloom is the best way.   These cutting should be dipped into a rooting hormone, planted in a pot and placed on the north side of the house.  The foliage should be kept moist.   You can prepare a place in the ground to transplant the cuttings once they have developed a root system.
