How do hydrangea's do in the extreme heat of Florida?
Q.  I saw a lovely article on southern hydrangea in this month's Southern Living magazine that mentioned your garden. I was wondering if you can tell me if any of these species do well in the extreme heat of Florida?

A.  The featured Oakleaf Hydrangea species performs better where there are four distinct seasons. This species required a great number of chilling hours during the dormant season. Other cultivars like the various Macrophyllia do better in warmer climate when protected by some shade. These do not require the dormant hours of the oakleaf types.
