High elevation growing

Q.  I recently established residence in Sapphire, Western North Carolina (elevation 3,050 feet) and am wondering if hydrangeas will do well at this elevation, facing substantial rain and not a great deal of topsoil. Still, I would like to adorn our extensive garden with this species. Any advice?

A.  Yes, they will grow in Western NC. There are several in Highlands and the Cashiers area. They are also at the NC Arboretum near Asheville. Cold does not seem to be a problem with this plant. Also, they are shallow-rooted and should do well in your soil.
